It is celebrated every year on 8th September, because UNESCO has designated this date to raise the awareness of literacy and to promote it as a tool for personal development.
On this day I would like to quote Kofi Annan who stated that “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope”, which means that if you are in extreme trouble then literacy will always enable you to move away from the state of suffering to a brighter future. Literacy allows you to break the chain of ignorance and poverty by providing access to knowledge, communication, and a broader perspective of everything.

At the same time, it plays an important role in removing poverty, stopping population growth, reducing child mortality, maintaining peace and democracy. Adult Education Campaign is ongoing at national level everywhere to promote literacy in the society.
Education brings light in our life. We can do a good job, make our future bright and can provide comfort to our family by education. Our life is incomplete without the education so it is necessary to be educated. Government is also taking necessary steps. Literacy programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, free and compulsory education for children below 4 years of age, mid-day meal, adult education have been going on in India for many years. So that people can understand the importance of literacy. But even today there are many people who are not getting education due to poverty and lack of money.
Let’s remember that literacy is a worldwide responsibility rather than just a personal goal on this World Literacy Day. By encouraging literacy, we are laying the groundwork for sustainable and peaceful societies in addition to creating a better future for ourselves. Let’s dedicate ourselves to this noble cause and work to change the world with the power of literacy.

Respected Principal, educators, and my dearest friends. I extend a sincere greeting to everyone in attendance. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to discuss the significance of World Literacy Day. As you are aware, literacy is the ability to read and write.. According to Nelson Mandela, “The ability to read and write is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Every person should be able to read and write in a civilized nation. If not, he is referred to as illiterate. A person who is illiterate encounters several everyday challenges in life. He is unable to read or write. He has moral and psychological insecurities and weakness, which results in an inferiority complex.
World Literacy Day is celebrated on 8th September every year. On 17th November 1965, the UNESCO declared 8th September as World Literacy Day to raise the awareness of literacy and to promote it as a tool for personal development. In 2022, Studies of UNESCO clearly point out, that Canada is the most literate country in the world whereas Mali and Sudan have the lowest literacy rates. Over sixty million children are absent from school, with many more attending irregularly or dropping out. Remember, our educational opportunities depend on literacy.
Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, It is also important to eradicate poverty, to reduce child mortality, to curb population growth, to frame a better future for the world. We can do a good job, make our future bright and can provide comfort to our family by education. Our life is incomplete without education so it is necessary to be educated. These are some of the good reasons why literacy is at the core of Education for all.
Apart of these all, the biggest objective of celebrating this day is to motivate every child to study in school. International Literacy Day plays a very important role in spreading awareness about education in our lives. According to census of India, the average literacy rate in 2011 was 73% and according to National Statistical Commission the literacy rate was 77.7 in 2017, The root of most social problems is illiteracy. Illiteracy is like darkness, because an illiterate person cannot think or do good for himself, then what will he be able to contribute towards the development of the nation and the family.
Finally, I remind you all “Literacy begins at home! Read books and inspire your kids to do the same!” Yes,It is meaningless to imagine a good life without literacy.
